What is L-theanine?
Like caffeine, L-theanine (sometimes written as simply theanine) is a naturally occurring, physiologically active compound in tea. In fact, because this non-protein amino acid is found almost exclusively in tea, L-theanine is one more positive aspect of tea drinking.
What are the benefits of L-theanine?
L-theanine has been shown to reduce mental and physical stress by stimulating the brain area related to increased relaxation and inhibiting activity in the part of the brain that has to do with anxiety. Preliminary research suggests that L-theanine may also:
- strengthen the immune system’s ability to fight bacteria and viruses
- improve cognitive performance and enhance concentration
- mitigate the effects of large doses of caffeine
- soothe nervousness
- lower blood pressure
L-theanine and Matcha
Matcha is particularly high in L-theanine, which makes it ideal for those who want caffeine along with a focused energy and improved performance. Many find that even though matcha has caffeine, the mitigating effect of l-theanine allows them to drink matcha in the afternoon or evening without disrupting their sleep schedule.
